Although it has been used by Guerlain to contain the extraits of several other of their fragrances, this style of bottle, referred to as “Noeud Papillon” (Butterfly Knot), was originally created by Baccarat to contain the extrait of Coque D’or, which means “Golden Shell” – a reference to the golden enamel that covers the cobalt blue bottle. The golden version was produced from 1937 until 1945, when the factory that did the gilding of the bottles was destroyed in the war. The name Coque D’or is a play on the title of the opera The Golden Cockeral (Le Coq D’or) by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. In addition to Baccarat, Pochet et du Courval also produced two sizes of this bottle – a 40ml bottle and an 82ml bottle that stood at 2.6 tall. Baccarat made a similarly sized 80ml bottle that stood at 2.56. I measured this bottle to be about 2 18/32″ which is 2.562″ – closer to the height of the Baccarat bottle. However, it is not marked by Baccarat or Pochet et du Courval. It only says “Made in France” on the bottom. So, I’m not sure who produced it. The bottle is in good condition. There are no chips or cracks. The stopper can be easily removed. What appears to be wear in photos is more a quality of the photos than actual wear. There is a slight amount of wear to the gilding, though. There are also a few flea-bites to the uncovered cobalt glass on the underside of the bottle.
