Solid 18ct yellow gold. In fairly great condition, showing little signs of wear. There is a fine scratch here and there but none of the scratches are visible without magnification. The perfume bottle dates to the victorian era. It is estimated to date between 1840 to 1850. There is one little hallmark on the top of the bottle stopper, it is a French import marking. It is in the shape of a knights helmet with a long flowing feather on the top. There is a small hidden compartment hidden on the bottom of the charm. This would have originally held a small sponge which you would have used to apply the fragrance to, then to yourself. Unfortunately the little sponge is missing with this charm, however it wouldnt be too difficult to track down a replacement. Possible from a modern material? There is a tiny little ball on the inside of the bottle, you can hear it rattle around inside the bottle. This is a little stopper which prevents all of the fragrance from pouring out when it is tilted upside down. It is made from 18ct gold also and will not fall out as it has a larger diameter than the neck of the bottle. The charm is completely handcrafted and hand engraved. It is very well crafted, much better than any of todays jewellery. There is a small service marking on the bottom of the charm. It reads 278/20/28 the first three numbers and the next two numbers are the numbers that correspond with the jeweller or gold smith that serviced the charm and the number 28 is the year it was serviced on (1928). These markings are often found on pocket watches. The little stopper on the top of the bottle is held in by a friction fit. Gently twist it 90° and itll come loose. It is incredibly difficult to find these fragrance bottles, especially one that is made from a higher carat gold as higher carats of gold are very soft and damage more easily than lower carats. So to get a bottle made from 18ct gold and in good condition is truely a one of a kind. The gold purity was tested using non destructive and accurate testing methods. It was confirmed to be 18ct yellow gold. The measurements are as follows. Length including the top loop: 33.2mm. Maximum width: 19.0mm. Minimum width: 14.7mm. Thickness of the bottle: 8.4mm. The top handle in the shape of a V is. 1.2mm in width. 0.5mm in thickness. The tiny little stopper is. 7.4mm in length. 3.8mm in maximum width. 1.7mm in minimum width. 2.9mm in maximum thickness. There have been no repairs. Nothing on this charm has been altered. In usable condition, however itll need a new sponge or piece of cloth. One of a kind. Please view the pictures for more infomation.
