The bottle features a painted piece of porcelain depicting a man and woman in 18th century attire, which would have been painted entirely by hand. The porcelain is surrounded by a 14k yellow gold filled over base metal border crafted into a repeating pattern of fleur-de-lis motifs. Faux turquoise stones also adorn the face of the bottle and the sides near the cap. A brass cap adorned with an additional porcelain painting completes the perfume bottle. White enamel was used to hand-paint portions of the yellow gold filled over base metal designs. There is no perfume in the bottle. Damage : Age appropriate wear. Tarnish on the brass gives this piece an antique quality which we believe is quite lovely. There is some wear to the white enamel, revealing the gold filled over base metal beneath it; however, this does not affect use of the bottle. The price has been reduced to reflect this. This listing is for the item only. This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women, and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a standard material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over the production of many products, including some jewelry. Gold filled jewelry consists of an outer solid gold layer over a metal base, and 5% of its weight should be derived from gold. This solid layer of gold is laid over a base of sterling silver or some other kind of metal to produce a high-quality gold look. Porcelain is a ceramic material that is very suitable for creating beautiful tableware and jewelry. It is a hard, heat resistant, opaque ceramic, which makes it a wonderfully tough decorative material. In jewelry the porcelain pieces were/are painted and glazed and set in brooches, earrings and necklaces. It can be glazed for a lovely shine, or left unglazed for a more earthy, natural look. Unglazed porcelain is called biscuit porcelain, which was popularized by Wedgwood, the British ceramic company. Porcelain served as a popular “canvas” for miniature portrait painting in the 19th century. Enameling originally dates all the way back to the ancient Persians of Meenakari. The technique involves bonding powdered glass to a base, usually gold, by firing (heating and melting the glass onto the metal). The glass hardens to form a layer of pigment over the metal. Enamel is made of colored powdered glass or may include clear powdered glass that is mixed with colorful metallic pigments. It was used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Celts; and later the Chinese and Georgians. It resurged in popularity in the 20th century. It is primarily used on decorative art or jewelry, usually small in size. Besides jewelry, enamel can also be applied to glass, ceramic, stone, and various other materials.
