Antique French Eglomise Grand Tour Souvenir Scent or Perfume Flask, Bottle, Chatelaine, Invalides. All items and photos are the express property of Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. With a superb mother of pearl-backed painting of “Hotel du Invalides” (Paris, now with tomb of Napoleon), this larger sized scent bottle is in remarkably fine condition for age. Dating early 1800s to perhaps 1860s, it still has its working cork, and the mirror backing is bright and reflective. A little secondary souvenir view in cap in the form of a tiny Stanhope (clear frosted glass with a tiny architectural image also on it, viewed a little like through a tiny telescope or magnifying glass). Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Set there in the crown of the cork top is a little Stanhope, but the image within is slightly dislodged so I can’t tell you what it is. I can see it floating, but it is the single’flaw’ notable, really. No even a nip or chip to that thick beveled glass on either side. The painting is perfectly preserved, as well. Full measurements are noted on our photos. There are 2 sizes of this chatelaine’palm’ scent, and this is the largest of all. We’re easy to deal with. You are very important! We’ve just bought the collection of a longtime good customer, and will have 31 pieces in all listing soon. The term, “eglomise” refers to a decorative technique of painting on the backside of glass. These are each little works of art. The collection varies from c. Will describe each as listed. Nearly 5 tall French blown glass scent bottle elaborate ormolu encasement and 5 views of Paris monuments (1 with a hairline crack). Complete with stopper, it is 4.75″ tall and 2 7/8″ square at base, this one has no chips breaks, damage to the ormolu collar and hinged cap mount, it has no other flaws to note, other than a hairline across the one side panel which view is of the Concord. Complete with 5 views of the Grand Tour architectural monuments a traveler would have enjoyed taking home: Pantheon (lid), Medici Palace, Madaliene Cathedral, Arch de Triomphe and the Concord one which has a hairline crack to the cover glass. I’ve always just displayed it with the Concord panel to the back view, and then it looks perfect. Possible to have that glass panel replaced, but it is the old slightly convex one and so we’ve left it as found and we’ve left that decision to its next owner. A superb example of mid-1800s Grand Tour souvenirs, a gorgeous casket, box, caddy for the 2 original scent bottles that still remain inside. This is the type available in the boutiques of the famed Palais Royal, and certainly a grand treasure that’s been well treasured for more than 150 years to survive without any damage to speak of, and no damage to the thick glass flasks though you see a tiny bit of moisture loss to one of the hand painted miniatures that are mounted under glass in the caps of each of the perfume bottles. The ormolu is in brass and appears to be completely intact. If there’s a tiny spot lifted or gone, it has escaped my examination. One usually finds a little bit, a corner or something lifted, but this pair is very solid. A wonderful pair of scent bottles of good size. One note – it has both of the original stoppers from inside, but one is currently stuck and we’ll be working it gently to get it loose and then will have that rather dirty look to the interior of bottle cleared up, as well. Again, both stoppers with this set. The views you see there in the eglomise paintings include the Madeleine and a monument that existed in 19th century that I can’t just now think of the name of which always drives me crazy. Will think of it in the middle of a night soon and will annotate the listing. Very good to excellent without damage or breaks, all the brass shawl or shrouding and caps fully, unbroken and in place, and no damage chips or cracks, no hairlines to the thick glass, nor to the ormolu. Typical of the velvet caskets, there is age showing to the exterior of the Napoleon III era chest in which the perfumes rest, but no rips or tears, no loss other than some of the silk velvet nap, and only one loss to the beautiful decorative onlays which include mother of pearl and brass. You’ll see it in the backside panel of the box. A lovely old set. We’re easy to deal with. You are very important! Our fine inventory is very important.
